It’s that feeling of getting all of the things done, checking all of the items off your list and then, nothing happens.
This is what career advancement can feel like sometimes; you feel like you’ve already stepped into your next position and yet, no title change. No pay increase.
I see you because I’ve been there before with a million thoughts racing around my mind…why am I not getting the promotion or the raise? Do you see me? Do you see the work I’m doing? Is there something you’re not telling me? I feel like I’m failing.
Let me reassure you. You are NOT failing. I promise.
Consider that career advancement is not always about checking items off a list.
It’s a true combination of what you’re doing and who you’re being. And time. Time to put your learnings into action, to ‘comp’ over yourself.
Some thoughts for you to consider:
⁉️ Have you shared widely what your career aspirations and expectations are?
Share and ask for what you need.
⁉️ Are you bringing people along for the ride when you’re in the work? Or telling them when it’s done?
Be an advocate around the work you’re doing, your accomplishments and teach people along the way.
⁉️ Are you regularly asking for specific feedback from your peers, functional partners and managers about what it’s like to work with you etc.?
Ask for specific feedback and then put it into action.
⁉️ Are you creating time and space to actively share feedback with your peers, functional partners and managers to support their growth and development?
Care about your peers, functional partners and your manager’s career development as much as you care about your own.
When they rise, we all rise. ⬅ this means you too.
Thinking about taking a little time to reflect on your career journey?
